Children's Ministry
Sunday School:
There are currently 3 children’s Sunday School classes and a nursery at Mt. Carmel. Current enrollment is 55. Our nursery is staffed at the 9:30 and 11:00 services. Children’s Church is held at 9:45. The children light altar candles, take up offering, sing favorite songs and learn the Doxology, Gloria Patri, the Lord’s Prayer and the Apostle’s Creed. They have a short lesson based on the lectionary readings of the day. At 10:00 they are dismissed to go to their Sunday School classes.
Nursery (2 years and under Pre-School Class Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd grades 3rd, 4th, & 5th grades.
During the summer months, volunteers in the church teach the children. The lessons are based on the GBGM mission studies. Offerings are sent to the Children’s Fund.In August the rising 3rd graders are presented Bibles and are taught a Bible introduction class.
At 11:00, the church provides “Extended Session” for children ages 3 through kindergarten. Children older than kindergarten are encouraged to attend the 11:00 service with their parents.
Music and Performing Arts:
Children’s Choir: The children practice during Children’s Church. The children sang on Palm Sunday, Children’s Sunday in June, Homecoming and on World Communion Sunday. They also visited Morningstar Assisted Living Centers and sang for the residents.
Each year a Christmas pageant is presented on the first Sunday evening in December. The 2009 pageant was “The Backward Christmas Pageant"
Bell choir program for children has recently been started. The children are learning to play Tone Chimes. They are being led by the chancel choir director.
VBS and other activities:
Mt. Carmel’s largest outreach activity is VBS. The 2009 theme was Crocodile Dock where “fearless kids learned to shine God’s light”. The children presented a program on Sunday morning following VBS highlighting their favorite songs and stories from the bayou along with a video produced by, one of our youth. VBS 2010 is High Seas Adventure and will take place June 7-11.
Other Activities: Other activities for children of Mt. Carmel and the community include an Advent workshop during which they make ornaments, Advent calendars and Christmas cards. A Pajama-Rama, Pizza & Popcorn Party for PNC (Parents Night Out) for families in the community. Valentines will be made at the Valentine workshop. The children made items during Lent to be put on our Lenten tree each week at the Lenten dinners and study. An Easter Egg Hunt will be held on the Saturday before Palm Sunday. During the summer community and church children can participate in Wacky Wednesdays, which include activities such as Red, White and Blue Day and trips to Monkey Joe’s and Stone Mountain’s Sky Hike.
The Blessing of the Backpacks will take place on Promotion Sunday when our rising third graders will receive, their Bibles. Fall activities will include the kids’ favorite, “Kids in the Kitchen” in September. A Fall Festival is held for the children which has crafts, games, moonwalks, a hayride, storytellers and food and is for the community for families.
All volunteers with children have undergone Safe Sanctuary Training and background checks.
