The Mount Carmel barbecue has been around so long that some of our neighbors call us the "Barbecue Church".
Despite the trash talk between the stew team and the meat team, barbecue has always been about more than meat.
Most of the funds stay close to home. Our greatest support is always given to Norcross Cooperative Ministry, which gives food, clothes and emergency financial assistance.
Since we are United Methodists, we serve God all over the world. BBQ has brought clean water to Chimbote, Peru and mobility to the lame in Zambia through our partnerships with leaveatrace.org and petzambia.com.
Stop by on a Sunday morning and see for yourself how Mount Carmel is more than BBQ. Creative and engaging worship means that R2D2 or Snoopy may show up at the children's time with examples to help us all understand the scripture lessons. A sermon might include packing relief kits for refugees, or a six pack of ways to give thanks in the worst of situations.
You'd be surprised by the music, too. The acoustic music at 9:30 is eclectic, ranging from the Beatles to Hank Williams to Big Daddy Weave. The traditional worship service at 11 is led by a world class organist and choir.
Mount Carmel is more than BBQ and more than worship on Sundays. Join us this summer as we turn the preschool classrooms into bedrooms for families in need of housing. Or pack lunches for kids who aren't getting free lunches at school.
Or join one of the small groups, where we are helping one another serve God at work, school, and home.
Stop by the next BBQ April 28 and 29th. We'll be around "til we run out". But don't forget that it's more than BBQ. It's about being a community that helps one another connect to God, grow together, and serve our neighbors.
